VOTE!

November 5, 2018 By Maggie M. Williams Leave a Comment

We interrupt our regularly-scheduled art-history pedagogy posts* for this brief and urgent plea: VOTE AS IF YOUR LIFE DEPENDED ON IT!

This is no longer about the American two-party system as it once existed. People over 40 like me can remember a time when we disagreed with Republican policies, but were able to have a respectful discussion about how to forge a policy that moved the government forward for everyone. Many life-long republicans can see what Trump has done to their party, and even they are urging folks to vote straight Democrat in order to put some kind of constraints on this administration.

The tragic incidents of the last few weeks are clearly a ripple effect of the hateful Trumpist rhetoric, which is steeped in racism and anti-semitism, the dark side of internet culture, and the constant stream of propaganda that has been coming from Fox News for 20 years.

Especially if you’re a woman, or a person of color, your ancestors fought and died for this right. Honor them by using it, or you will lose it.

Even if you are economically and/or socially conservative, please do your part to keep this country safe and democratic. I sincerely hope that, someday, we can respectfully debate policy again, but we can’t do that if we’re in a state of manufactured rage and fear.

YOU HAVE A VOICE–MAKE IT HEARD!

*we do actually have a great art-history pedagogy post that should be up very soon!
